FACULTY SEMINAR

CURRENT ISSUES IN TEACHING AND LEARNING
ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES

On the morning of April 6, 2024, The Faculty of Foreign Languages organized a scientific seminar on “Current Issues In Teaching And Learning English For Specific Purposes”. Attending the seminar, as guest speakers, were Dr. Nguyen Thanh Duong - Head of the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Foreign Trade (HCMC Campus); Mr. Ly Nhut Thien - Head of the Department of General English, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education; Mr. Nguyen Duong Hoang Minh - English teacher, Le Quy Don High School, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City; Ms. Nguyen Tran Ha My - Lecturer, Faculty of Business Administration; Ms. Nguyen Thi Như Thuy - Representative of Dai Truong Phat Education Group. On the side of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, there was Dr. Tran The Phi - Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages (chairman) along with the entire lecturers of the Faculty of Foreign Languages attending.

Continuing the success of the annual scientific events, the seminar “Current Issues In Teaching And Learning English For Specific Purposes” aims to discuss issues, difficulties, and practical challenges in teaching and learning ESP (English for specific purposes), in various aspects such as learning and teaching resources, ICT application, learning methods of students and teaching methods of teachers. The seminar welcomes contributions and sharing of experiences in teaching English for specific purposes in various fields. The list of presenters along with their topics for presentation and sharing is as follows:

1. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue - Faculty of Foreign Languages: Introduction to the teaching program of English courses at Saigon University - General English and ESP
2. Ms. Nguyen Trinh To Anh - Faculty of Foreign Languages: Moodle - A supplement to lecturing English for Finance
3. Ms. Tran Thi Cuc and Ms. Doan Thi Thuy Lieu - Faculty of Foreign Languages: Non-Majors’ Collocation Errors In The ESP Classes And Pedagogical Recommendations
4. Ms. Huynh Thi Nhat Uyen and Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Anh Thu - Faculty of Foreign Languages: English Language Teaching in Multilevel Classrooms. Challenges and Solutions in teaching speaking skills to ESP learners
5. Ms. Nguyen Tran Ha My - Faculty of Business Administration: Difficulties in studying Business Administration modules in English for students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages
6. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy - Dai Truong Phat Company: Teaching and learning materials for ESP

At the seminar, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Duong, Head of the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Foreign Trade (HCMC Campus), and Mr. Ly Nhut Thien, Head of the Department of General English, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education exchanged ideas and proposed methods to effectively deliver ESP courses. In his concluding remarks at the seminar, Dr. Tran The Phi acknowledged and highly appreciated the presentations and contributions of the delegates and educators in identifying shortcomings, recommending solutions, and directing improvements in content and programs to serve the fundamental and comprehensive educational reform. He affirmed that these contributions would be studied and refined by the seminar organizers to meet the demands of the new situation.
